Is it possible to move the location of a shared dashboard in Azure

Hi

I accidentally created some dashboards in central US, my company has introduced a policy of having all resources in the UK region or europe.

As I have already shared the dashboard with internal; teams I would prefer to move then recreate.

(Ps moving the resource group didn't affect the resources)

Any help would be great
(Apologies for the incorrect tagging but I couldn't find an appropriate tag and the form wont let me leave it empty)

You cannot move the dashboard object to a different region, however you could look to export the dashboard to an ARM template and then re-create it using this in your target region.

Hello @Stewart Pavitt (Azure Learn) ,

Since you already seem to have created and shared the dashboard , you will not see option to change the location . You can share a dashboard and move the shared dashboard to a resource group in UK region but the location tag of the dashboard will remain as it was during the time of publishing. It does take a few minutes to complete the movement of dashboard resource from one resource group to another though, depending upon the information defined in the dashboard tiles .

Solution :- At this point you have the option to download the JSON of the existing dashboard and create a new dashboard by uploading this JSON file to the portal again and then share it to your team members making sure that it is shared to an existing resource group which is already in UK region and the new dashboard will follow the location for the resource group which is UK in this case .

    • Upload :- >> 16360-image.png
    • Share and choose resource group which is already in UK region as below .

Let me share some additional insights into the dashboard creation process. When we create a new dashboard it is always private and needs to be shared before you can save it as an ARM resource to apply role based access control and assign it to team members as needed. When you try to share your first dashboard you get an option to publish it to a default resource group named dashboards and a location for storing the dashboards resource group as shown in the picture below. If you choose the default option, this location becomes the default location for all your future dashboard resources. You can choose not to create dashboards resource group and store it there and choose an existing resource group from your subscription. And here too whatever location the resource group is already present in , the dashboard location becomes the same.

Subsequently whenever you share and publish any dashboard , by default the dashboards resource group is selected if you created it the first time . If you had not created dashboards resource group the system will again provide you the option to create it as above. The dashboard follows the location of the resource group its being placed in . You can choose to save the dashboard in any other existing resource group as well by unchecking the option "Publish to the "dashboards" resource group"
