How is Office Alt Text Generated? Is it done locally, or is the image sent back to a MS server?

Hello,

Making a document on Word 356, I have noticed that it has auto-generated alt text for my images. I'd like to know if that is done locally, or if the image is sent to the cloud to generate the alt text? This is a concern for me, as the images in my documents are business sensitive and having them sent off our network would be something we would want to avoid.

Can you help?
Thanks,
Chris,

The alt text is created by a Microsoft server, not by Office. Disabling your internet connection prevents automatic alt text, but it also deactivates your Microsoft 365 installation. A retail version, like Office 2021, can have the internet connection disabled and still remain fully functional.
