Trying to create a auto numbering system

Hi guys,

I am trying to create auto document numbering system (Org-Dep-Type-00000) that will automate itself once a new document is added to the system. After a lot of googling I am no where closer to finding the answer. I am basically trying to create a document control system with document numbering and version controls. Please could you help me out.
