Hi,

We are in the process of upgrading our different RDS environments, and so far have completed all the RDS2016 -> RDS2019 upgrades.
We followed this guide, and it worked most of the time.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/upgrade-to-rds

We still have a few RDS2012R2 environments left, that we also want to upgrade to RDS2019.
Can we do this directly, or do we have to land on RDS2016 first, in order to upgrade the SQL DB Scheme?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    the server upgrade also means RDS Role servers upgrade. For RDS upgrade, please just follow the order in the doc you mentioned in Q:
    RD Connection Broker should be upgraded first;
    RD License server should be upgraded second before we upgrade Session Hosts and it is because RD Licensing server can host licenses from all previous versions of Remote Desktop Services and the current version of Remote Desktop Services but not the above;
    RD Session Host servers can be upgraded next;
    RD Web Access and RD Gateway can be upgraded anytime.

    Be sure to have a backup before you continue.

    Pity but still have to tell you there seems to be no official support matrix.

    hi,
    Yes, upgrading RDS to 2019 directly is possible. Then you can use the SQL 2012 or 2016 in 2019 RDS environment.

    but as for SQL DB upgrading, you need to go SQL Q&A for more information:

    Hi,
    Windows Server 2012 can only be upgraded to Windows Server 2016.
    Windows Server 2012 R2 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2016 even Windows Server 2019.
    here is the official doc for your reference:

    As to the compatibility of SQL server and RDS environment, there is no need to consider the version of SQL in RDS environment. that means, there is no relationship between RDS and SQL. here is the official doc for your reference:
