Hi Experts,

I'd like to know if there is a way to convert RDS CALs from 2022 and 2019 to 2012 R2? By the way the license was purchased through CSPP and the server did not recognize it's product key.

Thank you,
Joven

There is no conversion. Your new RDS CALs are backward compatible meaning they can be used for 2012 access but the new 2022 RDS Cals need be installed on a licensing server running Windows Server 2022

Hi @Anonymous , you mean we can install RDS CAL 2019 on license server 2012 R2 since it's backward compatible, right? Is RDS CAL backward compatibility available through Volume License type, Retail and CSP?

    Thank you,
    Jovs

No, not at all. RDS CALs are backward compatible. The RDS CAL for your users or devices must be compatible with the version of Windows Server that the user or device is connecting to.

The mentioned 2022 RDS Cals will need to be installed on a licensing server running Windows Server 2022

    Hi @Anonymous ,

I have no further question about my inquiry, I just don't know how to tag your answer as accepted so we can close this post.

    RDS CAL version compatibility
The RDS CAL for your users or devices must be compatible with the version of Windows Server that the user or device is connecting to. You can't use RDS CALs for earlier versions to access later versions of Windows Server, but you can use later versions of RDS CALs to access earlier versions of Windows Server. For example, an RDS 2016 CAL or higher is required to connect to a Windows Server 2016 RD Session Host, while an RDS 2012 CAL or higher is required to connect to a Windows Server 2012 R2 RD Session Host.
