SQL Server Management Studio: unable to install - Error 0x800B010C

Hi,

I tried updating SSMS from 18.6 to 18.10 and received error 0x800b010c.
So I uninstalled old SSMS, rebooted the machine and tried to reinstall - same error.

I searched forums, seems to be a problem some users experienced in the past with older versions, but non of the workarounds helped. I tried the Kaspersky Tool mentioned in other thread, but doesnt work.

How can I fix this issue?

    Have you read (some of ) the message in the log, like the one above? Which Windows OS are you using and is it a x64 bit one?

    Hi,

    it's Windows Server 2019 Standard x64. We have a few more servers with same image on which installation of latest SSMS was no problem.
    There never was a beta version installed.

    The problem is this:

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
    This issue may be caused by badly signed packages in the SSMS installer, and is also related to the HelpViewer 2.3 component.
    Please check this workaround from this similar thread which might be helpful:

    Using Certificate Manager I backed up and then completely emptied the following (Local Computer) physical stores: Trusted Root Certification Authorities (Registry), Trusted Root Certification Authorities (Third-Party) and Untrusted Certificates (Registry). I then installed all the certificates I found in the file (noted above) into the Trusted Root Certification Authorities (Registry). I then conducted an iterative process of running the SSMS-Setup-ENU installation. As each iteration failed I gathered more certificates from files causing authenticode issues. Eventually I was able to get a successful install. I then exported the Trusted Root Certification Authorities (Third-Party) as a Microsoft Serialized Certificate Store. I have posted this file online and shared it at the following link: https://app.box.com/s/zlxo6g58ntkc02yvtbq3o18k9tgcgenx.
    Forward to release 18.9.2 (from the previously noted site). It also fails to install. I emptied the stores (noted above) and imported the Microsoft Serialized Certificate Store file I had exported in the successful 18.9.1 installation. I then re-ran the 18.9.2 installation package and the upgrade was successful. The SHA256 for this file is 03e567b7475ec2e2da237d70e9a833deabf52ca66d521f340a1ebc8fdea91170 (in case the download mysteriously changes as it did for the 18.9.1 release).

    If it does not work, please try to install 18.9.2 and see if issue persists.
