As per support matrix - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/site-recovery/azure-to-azure-support-matrix "Availability scenario - supported. Scalability scenario - not supported." meaning you can enable replication for VMSS VMs but cannot scale these VMs as per your requirement.

@SadiqhAhmed-MSFT I don't know about OP, but I can't quite figure this one out.

First, there's no recovery option available in the Azure Portal when browsing the VMSS object. So, I'm only left with going to each individual VM instance.

Sidebar: I don't know if it matters, but when creating my VMSS object, the "flexible" option was chosen.

In an individual VM instance which I want to enroll in ASR, I go to Disaster Recovery, set my target region (I'm going from South Central US to Central US). Under Advanced Settings, I'm setting my target vnet, availability zone, and PPG. All storage is included (2 disks). I then pick my recovery services vault (which is in the target region) and set my replication policy.

With everything set, I then start the replication, which fails. This was done for multiple VMs which are instances of the same and different scale sets. Standalone VMs that are not in scale sets replicate just fine using these same settings.

Digging down into the error message results in this details page (attached)

I am unsure of how to do this recommendation. Am I needing to create a VMSS anchor for the replicated instance to reference? How do I point to such a VMSS?

Any help is appreciated!

You need to create VMSS in the target region and point it while enabling replication.

"and point it while enabling replication" - there's no option to do this in the Azure Portal UI. Can you walk me through the steps?

@SadiqhAhmed-MSFT I have answered my own question.

Important to know: I am using VMSS Flex, not traditional VMSS with Uniform instances.

I came across this Microsoft Learn page on VMSS Flex - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machine-scale-sets/virtual-machine-scale-sets-orchestration-modes

In it, it mentions that ASR is supported by VMSS Flex, but only through PowerShell. As of this posting Dec 9, 2021, there is no way to do this through the UI.

I will use PowerShell to enable. Thank you!
