Slow network performance when you open a file that is located in a shared folder on a remote network computer (Windows file server / VMware VM)

HI we recently migrated customer to cloud location and they now access file server over site to site VPN tunnel / windows file server
we tested with win 10 client and server 2012 client and download speed from windows file server is very slow for any file larger than 25 MB
any setting to check on the file server ? they are having trouble opening up the large files. the tested bandwidth is about 20 Mbit so I feel it is enough bandwidth to open the files. sometimes they open after waiting 60 seconds + and sometimes the application will just go into "not responding) mode - tested with PDF and Excel files .
Any suggestions available? The file server is OK for CPU and RAM and we checked it as well.

i tried copying a 1 G file across the vpn line and was able to substain up to 20 Mbit/s transfers .

Should this not be enough to launch a 20 MB + pdf or xls in less than 30 seconds ?

Hello @dirkdigs ,

Even if the nominal upload and download speeds of a link are equal, there can be differences in behaviour of the two directions - the performance can depend on specific characteristics of the client and server systems.

Without detailed tracing information, which most posters are reluctant to share, it is seldom feasible to offer any useful hypothesis for ostensible performance issues.

If you are willing to share trace data then let us know and then we can make some suggestions about what to trace and how to trace.
