Hi,

I'm looking for somebody that has some experience with the Data box disk for Azure Backup.

Wich registration do I have to use it, how to backup VMs directly on it, time to restore if there any crash (How much time take delivery to send back the Box from Azure site to entreprise), etc...

So, be able to speak with an Microsoft expert or consultant, why not, or perhaps, somebody here can answer me.

My goal is to transfer almost 10 Tb of data from on premise to Azure cloud. System Data box is useful for it and it avoids transferring a lot of data directly from on premise structure to Azure Cloud using the network system (It takes about 1 month to copy 10 Tb from our on premise to Azure Cloud according to my calculations).

I know Data Box is not a backup to long term but it is helpful just to send a large quantity of Data.
If I can transfer a large amount of data on it, I think I’ll be able to transfer the vmdk file (extension file of virtual machine) directly to Data Box, don’t you think?

In case of a big crash, I just have to reinstall the former system and ask Azure to send Data Box with my data back to me, so I’ll just have to copy data from Data Box to my on premise infrastructure.

Does that make sense to you?

Two questions:
. How long does it take to ship the Data Box back from Azure to Enterprise, is there any express shipping?

. If I want to use Data Box service, I need a Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) or Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (AE). What is the price of both and how can I get a subscription?

Data copy at customer site: Depends on nature of data, size, and number of files

Return shipping: 2-3 business days

Processing device at datacenter: 1-2 business days, subject to other orders pending processing

Upload data to Azure: Begins as soon as processing is complete and the device is connected. Upload time depends on nature of data, size, and number of files.
-You have your Microsoft Azure storage account with access credentials, such as storage account name and access key. The subscription you use for Data Box service is one of the following types:

Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) for new subscriptions or Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (EA) for existing subscriptions. Read more about MCA for new subscriptions and [EA subscriptions.

Hello @Azur osm Welcome to Microsoft Q&A community forum!

Unless something has changed recently, Databox is a method for offline seeding and there is no concept of backing up to it long term. It can be used by the MARS agent and DPM/MABS but the intent is for large data-set seeding into a Recovery Services vault. So I’m confused by the ask about backing up VMs directly to Databox (and I assume you are looking for a solution for on-prem VMs?). You could protect on-prem VMs using DPM/MABS and then use the Databox for seeding to a vault, if that’s the intent.

For the second part of that regarding how much time for delivery back from Azure. These products (MARS/DPM/MABS) do not have an integrated restore process which ties in with Databox. Databox is a seeding-to-Azure process only wrt backups. We do have the Azure import/export service but the export is from Azure blob storage and I believe it would require some manual data copying to first restore data from the Recovery Services vault (to an Azure VM’s data disk most likely), then copy to Blob storage, then get the data out through the export service.
