How do you search by username?
I can only seem to be able to search by user which isn't much help as lots of usernames have a blank user field.

Anything that's listed in the columns will be searchable. I would make sure that you have all of the columns that you want listed and that you don't have any filters applied. You can also try switching to the new Preview version for the enhanced search experience.
Name and UPN should always be visible. If you share a screenshot of what you are searching for and a screenshot of that user's properties, I will be able to better assist.

You can use the "Search users" box not only to search for names, but you can also enter a (partial) UPN or an object id in there.

That doesn't work.
If I enter part of any email address that is used as a 'User Name', Search finds nothing.
I think I see the problem.
You can search for "ada.wong", but not "a.wong"
Like really? How bad is that, it can't do a substring search unless you start with the beginning of the username?
Okay, so we have two directories, search works as expect in one, not in the other
In the one that is not working, where I cannot search by email address, I noticed the filter options look like this:
But the one that works correctly, has filter options that look like this
Your second screenshot matches what I see in the All users (preview) experience, and your first screenshot matches what I see in the older version. But I tested the search in both of mine and it appeared to work the same.
What you are describing seems accurate. You can search by substring of either the first or last name if you start with the first letter in the name, but not by text contained within the name. So with the user name "Chris Redfield" I can search by "Red" or "Chr" but not "field." I believe this is by design to avoid situations where you might be searching for a name like "Nathan" but you end up querying a list of people named "Jonathan."
