Hi All
I have two exchange 2016 servers running Version 15.1 (Build 1466.3).
What is the next CU I should upgrade to?
I tried upgrading to CU 22, but the install failed

Hi Michael.
Currently you should be running CU9, which is quite outdated.
Please note that it is always recommended to keep your Exchange server up to date for better support.
Since the latest CU version of Exchange 2016 is CU22, please consider upgrading to CU22 and also install the latest SU to protect your server from attacks.

You can go directly to CU22.
Here is a Microsoft tool which would guide you through the upgrade: Exchange Deployment Assistant
Once you enter the required information, it would list the detailed steps to upgrade.
In short, you may need to manually prepareSchema/AD/Domain and install the following prerequisites:
Then install CU22.
In addition, you may also use this script to check if the server is already for upgrade: SetupAssist.ps1

A quick question, on the part where it says; "to run the Start by updating Active Directory using the latest CU installation binaries. We recommend that you use the latest CU for the /PrepareAD even if you don't install the latest CU. If the operation requires a schema upgrade, the /PrepareSchema"
Where do I run the /prepareAD & /PrepSchema from? Are they part of the ExchangeServer2016-x64-CU22.iso ?

Yes. You may need the ExchangeServer2016-x64-CU22.iso to run the commands.
Please refer to this link: Prepare Active Directory and domains for Exchange Server
For example, if you mount the iso on E: , the commands would be like:
E:\Setup.exe /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms_DiagnosticDataON /PrepareSchema
Running the install now.
Ah it failed on Step 5 of 17..
With error
The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\FrontEnd\HttpProxy\owa\auth\15.1.2375.
oh boy, tried again, still failed at step 5, followed directions exactly from https://assistants.microsoft.com/assistants/#/session/412048af-9d20-4e5c-b0cb-06be13124bf2
Even worse, what happens when the install fails, all the MS exchange Services which have been disabled, when you enable them and try to start, they all fail, with "service cannot be found" :(

As the sever in question is being decommissioned on Jan 4th, I'm not going to attempt another upgrade.
