Server 2016 essentials DNS issues on workstations

Hi,

i am experiencing problems on 2 workstations. Each reboot they change the DNS1 entry into the server static IP-address (yet DNS is set to DHCP on the clients).
The server is setup as a DC but does not do DHCP. DHCP is controlled and issued from the Fritzbox.

Configuration server= 192.168.2.2 (static) 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.2.1 DNS1 192.168.2.1 Netbios over TCPIP enabled
Hostname: DomainServer Primary dns suffix domain.local node: hybrid iprouting YES WINS proxy NO DNS Suffic searchlist domain.local

Configuration fritzbox: 192.168.2.1 (static) /24 Local DNS Server: 192.168.2.1 DHCP Active 192.168.2.20 - 192.168.2.200

If the 2 workstations use WIFI they get the correct configuration and have acces to the internet and the resources on the server. If connected via the LAN the DNS1 entry changes into 192.168.2.2 (address of the server) with no access to server and to the resources on the server.
When i change the settings on the NIC of the workstation into DHCP the get the working configuration, but at the next reboot of the workstation DNS1 is each time changed into 192.168.2.2

Thanks for any help on this (very) annoying problem.

best regards

robert

    The domain controller and all members must use the static ip address of DC listed for DNS and no others such as router or public DNS. So change two things;

    • domain controller should have own static ip address listed for DNS, (remove router address)
    • DHCP server should hand out static ip address of DC for DNS (not router)

    Hi Patrick,

    so you suggest that i set the NIC of the server to this configuration: 192.168.2.2/24 GW 192.168.2.1 DNS1 192.168.2.2 and in the DHCP server (on the router) i should alter the entry for DNS-server to 192.168.2.2

    I have to point out there is no DHCP-role defined on the server

    Best regards robert

    Hi, today i went onsite and altered the settings on the server nic and the fritzbox router as suggested. After a reboot of the server and a reboot of the modem/router i had no internet access anymore on the server and on the workstations (i verifified the settings of the nics on the workstation and could see that the settings were correctly distributed.

    NO internetaccess
    servernic (static) 192.168.2.2/24 GW 192.168.2.1 DNS1 192.168.2.2
    DNS-server set in the Fritzbox => 192.168.2.2

    internetaccess OK with these settings:
    I changed the settings back to 192.168.2.2/24 GW 192.168.2.1 DNS1 192.168.2.1
    DNS-server set in the Fritzbox => 192.168.2.1
