Increase maximum length of the employeeID attribute in Azure AD

We have a 46 character employee ID's in use in another system.

We decided to import these to onsite AD, which is synced to Azure AD.

We found that the onsite AD employeeID attribute had a 16 character limitation, so we increased the range-upper limit of the employeeID attribute in the onsite AD schema.

After increasing this limit, we imported our employee ID's to our onsite AD.

Shortly thereafter, we started getting errors syncing to Azure AD: "The object failed to be synchronized because one or more the attributes were larger than the allowed limit of size or length or count. Update the attribute to follow the limits."

How can we increase the maximum size of the employeeID attribute in Azure AD as we have done with the on-site AD?

@Anonymous I have got confirmation from product team that there is current limitation of 16 characters. I suggest you to please post this as a feedback at UserVoice. This will allow the community to up-vote and for the product team to consider this feature in future releases.

    Hi,

Could you please verify if the synch error is because of Empoyee ID attribute length or it is coming because of some other attribute, you can refer below URL as It describes how to find errors in the on-premises component Azure AD Connect synchronization.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/tshoot-connect-object-not-syncing

    Please do post the outcome.

    Thanks,
    Ravi
