Files and folders are opening with single-click instead of double-click

Hi guys,

I have an Active Directory domain where some users open files and folders with just single-click instead of double-click.
When a user points a mouse cursor on a file or folder it is displayed as a link.

I checked folder options - looks fine.

I checked GPOs - there is no GPO that controls folder options.
I checked two users who are in the same OU and have the same GPOs applied - one of them open files and folders with double-click and the other one with single-click.
This makes me think it is not GPO related.

What else it could be?

I found that it is because of a registry key Classic Shell (1) under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
Deleting that key resolves the problem although it is not clear how that key was created.

    Hi @Cloud_Geek_82

Thank you for your question and reaching out.

I can understand File and Folders gets opened up without double click. This issue happens, if there is mouse/hardware issue or it can be settings issue. I would suggest you to follow the troubleshooting steps as mentioned below:

    Method 1: Restore the defaults.

Press Windows and E key together on your Keyboard.
Go to View tab on the top.
Click on Options > Click on Change folder and Search options.
Click on Restore Defaults. Click on Apply and Ok.

Method 2: Change the Mouse settings.

Click on the Settings icon from the start menu.
Click on Devices > Click on Mouse from the left panel of the window.
Click on Additional Mouse Options from the right pane.
This will open the Mouse Properties window, go to Buttons tab.
Under the Double click speed, drag the slider to the left to slow down the double click speed.
Next, go to Pointer options tab, uncheck the "Enhance Pointer Precision" to disable pointer precision to slow down the mouse.

Also , please Download below tool diagnostic and repair too from Microsoft which will fix Folders and some customization related settings.

Hope this answers your question :)
    Thank you.

I spent a lot of time trying all those suggestions but finally found out that replacing the mouse solve this problem.
