Removing Protected Servers (Azure Backup Agent)

Hi All,

May I know what risk can I get from this message? I am trying to delete MARS agent from the portal. I've watched videos online on how they do it but I dont see the message as below. I only have agent as backup management type

Hi @SadiqhAhmed-MSFT . Thank you for your answer. My concern actually is that on the Microsoft documentation, there is no warning saying "This server is registered under another backup management type. Deleting this server will also delete server data associated with the other backup management type." But on mine, it has this message.

BTW, I've already migrated to Veeam backup that's why Im deleting this on RSV. And if this message is just the same as what you originally explained, I will go ahead with the deletion. I just wanted a confirmation :)

What I briefly posted in my previous response goes well with the error message.
As far your question about MS documentation not mentioning the error details, is because if you follow the documentation correctly there won't be any blockers.

The message you see is not an error but just a self help information to educate users what happens when you perform deletion operation.

I see. Thanks for that. But if I am only deleting the MARS agent on the RSV, I am still on the right track? I mean, the correct sequence is to delete first protected server on cloud then uninstall the agent from the on premise server?

I mean, when I plan to remove it from RSV, the effect would be permanent and all data are deleted immediately

Now I tried to remove it from RSV, but when I go to on prem to delete it, it shows this error. Does this mean I can just uninstall the agent here?

If soft delete is enabled, 14 days retention applies.

Hello @Faye Marie Brucal - Welcome to Microsoft Q&A community forum!

As per screenshot, you are using Azure backup agent and there is one server protected (meaning, being backed up to Azure). If you are planning to remove/delete the protected server, the backup data associated to that server will also be deleted from recovery services vault (RSV). Once this delete operation is performed, there will be no data in the cloud for that particular server. Here is the guide you can refer to - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-delete-vault?tabs=portal#delete-protected-items-in-the-cloud

Recommendations: For production servers protected with Azure backup, it is not recommended to delete server unless you have a backup plan in place.

If this is a test server and you want to delete it after testing Azure backup, you can go ahead and complete the deletion task.
