ADMX storage location on Windows 10 2004

We do not store policy definitions in the SYSVOL folder on a domain controller, but instead keep the policy templates on the local computer where the RSAT tools are installed. I have the templates stored in C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions on my Windows 10 machine, but when I browse to that location from within a GPO to add a template, the folder shows empty. There was a registry change I had to make on a previous Windows 10 computer to make these files visible when I browsed for them from within a GPO, but I haven't been able find documentation on it. When I do add/remove template and browse, it defaults to C:\Windows\INF.

It could be that I'm missing something simple - appreciate any assistance.

What I would do is go to the link listed below and download the policy definitions installer, extract them to your desktop.
I would then copy the new policy definitions folder and paste it in the C:|windows file structure.
By default you can not add any files to this folder and subfolder, you need to take ownership and add the modify right to the admin group.
the folder, subfolder, and all files should replace the previous files.
then open GPMC and it should work.

If you open GPMC look at the administrative templates and it will state if it is local or central store.

When you use GDEDIT to edit a GPO you will automatically see any ADMX entries that are in your local store in the GPO ready for you. You do not need to add them in. You can edit and manage GPOs from a PC if you have the relevant RSAT tools installed, these need to be installed then added in as windows features, if your are in to scripting these can be added with DISM function.

If you need to add one the AMDX files go into C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions, the ADML ones go in the language sub folder usually en-US though just occasionally there are en-GB versions which need to go into a folder of that name.

There will be a lot of options when you open up a GPO and you will have to wade through all the folders to find which one you want.

If you want to see what has been set on a GPO you can go in to the policies folder and it lists all the policies in the GPO and you can sort by enable/disabled to quickly make adjustments.
