Entering Keywords in SharePoint Online When a Similar Keyword Already Exists (i.e., thwarting auto-complete)

This might just be an interaction issue: what key combination do I need to press to add a NEW keyword when it's part of an existing, longer term already in the list?

Example: I want to create the keyword 'imaging,' but SharePoint already has existing keyword terms such as 'imaging technologist,' 'imaging technical records,' and 'imaging clinical data.' Thanks to the auto-complete feature, I can't just type imaging+[Enter], because that immediately jumps to the first existing term and selects that instead. I can't backspace, because that deletes the word; I can't use the arrow keys because that exits the cell.

So how do I enter a shorter version of an existing keyword as a new keyword?
