Azure backup suddenly failed and I'm not sure why.

I had an Azure server backup running fine for a couple years. Today I noticed my last backup was about a year ago! Nothing was changed on the server or in my Azure portal. But when I try to open the Azure backup client on the Windows 2012 server I get the error "Azure Active Directory Unexpected Error". I'm at a lose what to do next.

Hello @PhilipB Thank you for contacting us and I apologize for the inconvenience this must have caused!

Firstly, if the failure is due to AAD Connectivity issue:
Most likely this has something to do with firewall or antivirus. Please add appropriate exclusions. Doc ref: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-azure-manage-mars#configuring-antivirus-for-the-mars-agent
This might be an intermittent outage in AAD which is causing the failure.

Secondly, please ensure you have the updated version of MARS agent running on the machine. Download the latest version of the Azure Backup agent.

If possible, reboot the machine once and then launch Microsoft Azure backup console.
