Windows 10 Pro - backup to NAS (part of DOMAIN) / Fails with 0x80070005

Environment:

Home Domain Controller - Server 2019

Multiple Windows 10 computers - all fully updated to 21H2

NAS: TrueNAS 10.0-U7 (joined to the Domain)

Problem:

I have the DC backing up to the NAS no problems at all...using an AD account - and password. This was easily setup after the proper ACL was set on the NAS to allow this account access to the SMB share (it uses SMB v2/v3) Did not have to enable SMB v1 on the DC to allow backups.

The issue is with the Windows 10 machines - none of them will back to the SAME location on the NAS. I am able to MAP a drive to the NAS folder with no issues from any of the Win10 PCs (also joined to the domain). I can Add/Delete/Rename files - not issue. However when I go into the BACKUP tool in Windows 10 (which kicks me over the old Windows 7 version because I want to do System Image and files backup (weekly). It walks me through the wizard...I choose Network location and click the BROWSE button. I am asked for credentials, and I use the same that the Server 2019 is using to perform backups to the NAS. I seem to have no issues there.

I get to the end of the wizard, and it give me the option to "Backup Now". I choose this. It goes about 15 seconds, and I get an error that it failed. The error is 0x80070005. I can see on the NAS folder there is a single .TMP file created with a 0 byte file size. Nothing else.

*** I also have an old Windows 7 PC (soon to be decomm'd) and it has no problems backup to the same NAS - same location - same Domain credentials.

I have tried everything. I have followed many articles posted. I have tried setting the BLOCK LEVEL BACK ENGINE services to run as local computer Admin, the domain account that I use to login (which is a Domain Admin and a Local Admin), the domain account used for Backups. I get the message that the message that the account is granted "Run As Service" message. None of these has worked.

I am at my wits end. One would think this would not be this hard. Once I setup the Server 2019 to back there - in less than 10 mins tops (after I adjusted the ACLs on the NAS - forgot that when I created the share)....seems that Windows 10 should just as easy. Especially since I am able to MAP a drive to this BACKUPS folder (which BTW does seem to be an option in the Backup tool)....only shows me LOCALLY CONNECTED DRIVES.

I was able to get this to work (see image):

Please Advise - how I fix this.

    Hi there,

This issue occurs when a drive that uses the NTFS file system is configured for file-level backup. Because the $RmMetaData directory is NTFS internal data and cannot be accessed by other processes, this issue occurs.

To work around this issue, Configure the server backup policy on the affected drive as a block-level backup. After you do this, the whole volume is selected for backup.

The server backup process fails and "0x80070005"

    LT-2700,

I have looked at that before I ever posted here. I saw:

    Method 1
Configure the server backup policy on the affected drive as block-level backup. After you do this, the whole volume is selected for backup.

But there are no instructions how to do this. I tried changing the SERVICES for Block-Level Backup Engine - first to use the "Local Administrator" account - after enabling it and setting a password. Did not work.

Then I set the services to run as the Domain account I have set to access the NAS Share (and made sure it was in the Backup Operators group and then tried Local Admin group) - this also did not work.

I set the service back to LOCAL SYSTEM - and still not working.

I do not understand why my DC (Server 2019) has no problems at all doing the backup - but Windows 10 will not.

The only thing I got to work was the SYSTEM IMAGE option on the left-hand side of the backup app - and that was totally manual. I want to schedule a weekly backup of these boxes. I do not want to install a 3rd party app - Windows should be able to do this.

I simply cannot understand this..... Using the EXACT SAME process that I use on my Server 2019 Domain Controller to make "Daily" backups - which have worked flawlessly since NOV 9, 2021 (when the new Domain Controller was built).

My old Windows 7 laptop - is also backup to the NAS Share - using the same Domain Credentials that I am trying to use on the Windows 10 box. I am NO IDIOT - I know how to setup a backup.

Mapping a drive does not help either. There has to be a FIX for this....I have set the SERVICES to run as SYSTEM, does not help. Set them to run as LOCAL ADMIN Account (does not work), Set to run under the BACKUPS account (which is a member of the Local Admin and Backup Operators group on the Windows 10 box).

This morning - To add insult to injury - as a test this morning, I decided to attach a USB HDD to the computer and attempt a backup - just as I am trying to do to the NAS. LOW AND BEHOLD -- It worked.

Which begs to reason that it is a not FILE ACCESS ISSUE - but plainly an issue with MICROSOFT"S PRODUCT - and they DO NOT KNOW HOW to fix it.

Is no-one able to assist with this?

I mean COME ON MICROSOFT!!!! It is an application within your OS. and it does not work.

It makes absolutely no sense at all - that the Windows 7 Laptop never has a problem backup up to my NAS using the exact same credentials that I am trying to use in Windows 10.

Even the DOMAIN CONTROLLER backs up nightly to the same NAS location.

    How Do I Fix This?!?!?!?
