Authenticator registration issues

My account was just created and I have to use Microsoft Authenticator. As I try to login, it tells me to keep my account secure by using the authenticator app. However, when I push next it just spins for awhile and then tells that the authenticator registration has timed out.
In my authenticator app it shows the email account and if I tap it, it shows a pass code. It looks as if my email is setup in authenticator, but my email doesn't recognize that it's already setup in authenticator. How do I get my email to recognize that the authenticator is already connected?
