Japanese keyboard does not match keys on RD

Hi there,
I am using the Microsoft Remote Desktop on a macOS and my keyboard has a Japanese QWERTY layout. However, the keys do not match the ones on my keyboard. The symbols above the numbers are ! " # $ % and so on, but when I type it shows the regular US-EN QWERTY layout. For instance, I have " above the number 2 key, and whenever I input that one in the RD, it comes off as @. I have tried setting up the Japanese QWERTY as the default keyboard and removed all others, but it simply does not work.
Any thoughts on this?
