I am planning on migrating our SCCM from 1802 to 2002,, question is how do I find out if the 2002 is compatible with older client agent version. Our servers are running on older client agent version and we do not plan to upgrade them at the moment. Is there a way to check compatibility ?

    Hi,

Thank you for coming Microsoft Q&A forum.
SCCM is compatible with older client agent version, all of the very core communication and policy processes work the same, but there are some new features that you cannot use because it requires the clients agent to be upgraded to the latest version, so it's recommend to upgrade clients agent to the latest version. Is there any reason that do not upgrade the client agent version?
You may try to configure the automatic client upgrade:

I would not assume that anything ConfigMgr clients older than a year will work. Why wouldn't you update the clients to the latest version?

While @AllenLiu-MSFT 's answer is correct, this is not supported for long term use.

And, as @GarthJones-0118 asked, why would you do this?

the team handling the server side always skeptical about upgrading hence we have different versions of clients on the server side the oldest client version being 5.008239.1403, my concern right now is if upgrading SCCM to version 2002 will have any impact cos they will be working on upgrading once we have upgraded sccm

    Client version 5.008239.1403 is correspond to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 CU3.
You may read the official documentation: interoperability between current branch and earlier versions.
It just mentioned you can't install a client from System Center 2012 Configuration Manager on a computer that hosts a site system role from Configuration Manager current branch. You also can't you install a Configuration Manager current branch client on a computer that hosts a site system role from System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.
And the upsupported client connection list not contain SCCM 2012 R2. So it should not have compatibility issues for your situation.
