Windows 11 Enterprise Auto Restarts for Updates

I have domain joined laptops with the following policies configured. Over the last few months, they have been automatically rebooting to configure updates and I can't figure out why. These reboots are happening while users are logged into the laptop, actively working and during active hours.

Active hours set for 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM

User is logged into and actively working on laptop

Configured Group Policies:

  • Schedule Update Install Time
  • Auto reboot will not happen with logged on users
  • Automatically download updates and install them on the specified schedule
  • Set automatic update options
  • Schedule update install day
  • Schedule update install every week
  • Target release version for feature updates
  • Target product version for feature updates
  • Enable the method by which the auto restart required notifications are dismissed

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to update restart issue.

It seems that the issue may be related to the "Schedule Update Install Time" policy. This policy specifies the time when updates are installed on the device. If the scheduled time falls within the active hours, the device will automatically restart to complete the installation.

You can adjust the "Schedule Update Install Time" policy to a time outside of the active hours. You can also consider disabling the "Automatically download updates and install them on the specified schedule" policy and instead manually install updates during a time that is convenient for your users.

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options, and make sure that the "Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to install an update" option is turned off.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Molly
