We are getting the error
Content of directory on path 'https://account.dfs.core.windows.net/synapse/curated/file/_delta_log/*.json' cannot be listed
According to the help documentation

It's a permission issue with quickest resolution to give Storage Blob Data Contributor permission - but I have Storage Blob Data Contributor... what else can we try?

- These are pre-existing delta tables with the queries now failing previously working fine.
- Querying the same delta tables from Spark work fine.

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to read file(s) in Azure Data Lake Gen 2, and you have given yourself the appropriate permissions, but it still gives you permission errors.
As RBAC permissions override ACL permissions, ACL's cannot be the cause.
I suspect the cause is whether the request is being made under your credentials as a user, or under the workspace's credentials. Whichever one it is, giving permissions to the other one would explain the confusion. This is assuming you haven't specified other credentials to use.The default is using your identity as a user, AKA, Azure AD Pass-thru.
Try giving the Storage Blob Data Contributor to both yourself and the Azure Synapse workspace.
