Future deprecation of virtual smart cards

Windows Hello for Business is the modern, two-factor authentication for Windows 10. Microsoft will be deprecating virtual smart cards in the future, but no date has been set at this time. Customers using Windows 10 and virtual smart cards should move to Windows Hello for Business. Microsoft will publish the date early to ensure customers have adequate lead time to move to Windows Hello for Business. We recommend that new Windows 10 deployments use Windows Hello for Business. Virtual smart cards remain supported for Windows 7 and Windows 8.

  2. How much lead time can be expected from the publish date before deprecation?
  3. Will deprecation impact existing Windows versions that support virtual smart card or only new versions?

    You may keep an eye on the article and like you shared there is no exact date.
    The recommendation is to migrate to Windows Hello and take a note that support for Windows 7 is already ended and support for Windows 8.1 will be ended too. However, let say in case you want to deploy Windows Hello for Business from now on and ready to depart from the Virtual Smart Card.
