Why do some word 365 images become non-visible in web layout view?

I am using word 365 Version 2201 (Build 14827.20158 Click-to-Run).

In a large document with many images, when you change from Print Layout to Web Layout, all images after a certain point are NOT displayed.

It is only the last 15 images that are not displayed, the properties look ok, all inline.
I tried deleting an image, I tried adding back a snipped image (from a test document) and it would not display either.

Switch back to Print Layout and you can see the images again.

It looks likes like some sort of internal limit of displayed images in Web Layout.

    Hi @Gerard Naughton ,
I tested this problem with the same version and I entered several pictures with different file format: .png, .jpg, .jfif, .gif, I also tried 3ways to insert pictures into document: Insert, Link to file, Insert and Link, by these ways all pictures can be visible in Web Layout view.

Did you create the document in local?
What kind of file format did insert into Word?
How did you insert pictures into Word?
How many picture did you insert into Word? I tested 100 pictures without problem.
Try to open Word in safe mode and inserted pictures directly and check if this problem still existed.

I opened a new blank document in Web Layout, then I snipped a web page and added a little text before and after, then copied the text and image many times. In Print Layout there is no problem.

297 images are visible, the 298th image is distorted and after that the images are not visible.

    A visible image:

The second last image is distorted:

The last image is not visible, but its layout extends into the previous image:

also, I tried safe mode (run winword /safe) and it makes no difference, web payout is missing the images for the last picture.

Also, I am using an MS Surface Pro 7 upgraded to Windows 11

    Hi @Gerard Naughton ,
After trying to insert more pictures in documet, I can reproduce this problem in my Word 365:
    173464-67.png
And I found this seems to be the known issue in Word since 2013, you can get the same problem from here:
    https://superuser.com/questions/989720/large-document-is-sluggish-and-its-pictures-not-visible-in-web-layout

In my opinion, you can try to give a feedback to Microsoft about the problem:

Microsoft values your opinion. Your feedback goes directly to our engineers and helps us shape the future of Microsoft products and services for all our users.

Thanks for confirming the issue. I sent feedback to Microsoft as you suggested.

It sounds like I will have to split the document if I want to keep using Web Layout.
