Windows Shares

Hi All,

I am about to begin our File Share server migration onto a new box.

I have been told that the best way to copy the non NTFS Shares is to export from the Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanserver\Shares. When I looked at the contents I got somewhat confused.

My Questions are.

  1. I see many shares in the registry associated with the shares on the server, but there are some shares on the server not present in the registry. For example we have a Mapped volume (HR) but I don't anything in the registry for this.
  2. There is not going to be much change in the Shares from now until we actually cut over. My intention is to export the current registry keys and import to new server. We still need the current legacy server - so if I export will that affect the legacy server in any way. This is still live for the next 4 weeks until the cutover. I was hoping I could export without affecting the legacy server.

Any help or guidance would be greatfully received.

    Hello @czql5v

The \Lanmanserver\Shares only contains NetBIOS shares, other protocols will not be included, for example Macintosh volumes. My suggestion would be to investigate what differenciates the shares that are not appearing in that registry chain, and look for export guides online.

Hope this helps with your query,
