Need to upgrade a 2019 Essentials to 2022 Standard. What will be the best upgrade path?

In-place upgrade of 2019 Essentials to 2022 Essentials, then 2022 Essentials to 2022 Standard? (2022 Essentials trial license key works in this case?)

Or in-place upgrade from 2019 Essentials to 2019 Standard, and then in-place upgrade again from 2019 Standard to 2022 Standard?

Thanks!

Do not do an in-place upgrade.

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health correcting all errors found before starting any operations. Then stand up the new 2019 or 2022, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

There is no 2022 Essentials edition, only Standard and Datacenter (in addition to Azure-based editions)
