I have been having this same issue and it was driving me mad. I think the problem you're describing is, in word, when you go to "Save a copy" or "Save as pdf" feature, hit "more options" and make sure the option to "open file after publishing" is DESELECTED. It should keep that preference automatically going forward.
Save As a PDF in Word, Excel and Powerpoint opening PDF in Google - How do I Stop it Doing This?
Hi, I have recently upgraded to Windows 11. I create a lot of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files that I need to save copies of as PDFs as well as their respective documents. For some reason now I am on Windows 11 when I do File, Save As, and change the file type to PDF it is opening the document up in Google. It never did this in Windows 10 and it's really annoying. Is there anyway to stop this from happening? I need to still open PDFs in Google when attached to emails, etc but just need to stop Windows opening the saved PDFs. Thank you.

-Open your PC's Control Panel and click on "Default Programs". Proceed with accessing the "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" settings.
-Find the .pdf entry. Highlight its row and click the "Change program…" button. A window will appear to prompt you into choosing the preferred default PDF viewer.
-If you are unable to see the preferred PDF viewer, you can find it by clicking on the "More apps" link. If you still cannot find it, scroll down and click the "Look for another app in this PC" link.Hope this resolves your Query!!
