Currently have a MEMC software update point and distribution point installed on server 2012r2. We are looking to decommission this server and move to Server 2019. We are currently on MEMC 2103. Is there a strategy to migrate the existing SUP to a new server or is the best plan to uninstall the old SUP and then install and new SUP and distribution point on server 2019? In reading some posts it seems like there may be issues when moving from WSUS on server 2012 to WSUS on server 2019? Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. Note: doing an in-place OS upgrade is not an option.

    Hi,

In reading some posts it seems like there may be issues when moving from WSUS on server 2012 to WSUS on server 2019?

Yes, it may be some issue. When we migrate the sup, WSUS should be installed the situable version on server 2019, but the migrated SUP version is older than WSUS version, which will cause the problem when using the SUP.

So it is suggested to uninstall the old SUP and then install and new SUP, then select the catelog updates.

About distribution point, if we have content in it, we could migrate it. If backup contents is still on the side of site server, we could uninstall the old DP and then install and new DP.

Here is the article about migration, refer to it:

Based on what I have read it seems like the best strategy is to completely uninstall the existing WSUS/SUP running on server 2012R2 and reinstall wsus/sup on a new server running server 2019 as opposed to trying to run both versions simultaneously. I know that when you have a remote wsus you need to install a copy of the wsus console on the primary site. In this case that console would be from server 2012R2 since that is what we are running on our primary site. Do you think this will cause any issues communicating with the new wsus which will be running on server 2019? We will be upgrading out primary site server to 2019 eventually, but it will probably be 3-4 weeks.

    thanks,
