SQL Server Database Connectivity Issues

Not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask, but I currently use MS SQL Server Management Studio (v18.10) for work. Whenever I'm on WiFi, I have no issues connecting to SQL Server databases, but as soon as I plug in my ethernet cable, I can't connect and I get timeout errors. I would just stay on WiFi, but I'm currently using a docking station (Dell WD19) and for some reason, this docking station is causing my WiFi speeds to drop from ~500 Mbps to less than 5 Mbps. Any insights are appreciated.

This sounds like a more general networking problem. Like for some reason, you get on a different network with your cable than your WiFi.

Is this at home or at work? Where are the SQL Server instances? Do you connect over VPN?

What about other resources, like file shares?

    Hi YukonCornelius1964-3231,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
    Are there any error messages?
Could you try to ping <ip address> in cmd to test the connectivity? The IP address of the computer that is running SQL Server.
Please refer to this troubleshooting article which might be helpful.
And for network issue, I suggest you add a tag windows-10-network to get more help.

but I'm currently using a docking station (Dell WD19) and for some reason, this docking station is causing my WiFi speeds to drop from ~500 Mbps to less than 5 Mbps.

Sorry I’m not familiar with docking station. You can also try to open a thread in the Dell corresponding forum.
    Best Regards,
    Amelia

This is at home, using a VPN to connect to work servers

What happens if you plug in the network cable, and then connect with VPN?

The VPN connection may not like that the underlying network connection changes.

When this happens, have you tried with other work resources like file shares, intraweb sites etc? I find it a little difficult to believe that it would be specific to SQL Server.
