I have a Hyper-V 2019 Cluster backed up by DPM 2019. Both are on latest patch levels as of today. There are around 150 VMs in the cluster being backed up.
Backups are usually running fine, but we regularly see a handful of backups fail with these errors, just to be retried automatically and successfully later.

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Unspecified error (0x80004005))
An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Unknown error (0x80041001) (0x80041001))

This happens on random VMs on random hosts.

@Ingo D - In some scenarios Hyper-V snapshot merge is failing due to which you might see this error. When the backups are failed, please check if you find unmerged snapshots on the VM. That should confirm the issue. In either case I would suggest connecting with our support team to investigate this further. Also ensure that you have antivirus exclusion configured as documented here - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/run-antivirus-server?view=sc-dpm-2019

@Alex_Nick I eventually was able to get rid of the issues permanently by serializing the backups of VMs on our CSV following the instructions given here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions//hh757922(v=technet.10)
If you're backing up VMs on a CSV without the use of hardware VSS providers, you may give this a try. I would also advise to create a scheduled task for the daily creation of the DataSourceGroups.xml file to capture any new or moved VMs.
