OneNote 2016 No Longer Open Hyperlinks or Attached Files

I am currently using the desktop version of OneNote 2016. Daily, I use this notebook to use hyperlinks and open attached files. I can no longer open hyperlinks or attachments.

When I double-click on an attachment to open it, I get an error: "We couldn't sync this section because we were denied access to the file." But if I right-click and "save as" to my desktop, I can open it from there.

When I click on a hyperlink to open in a web browser, I get an error: "An unexpected error has occurred." But I can right-click, "copy link" and paste into my web browser.

I have two copies of my notebook, one that I use from my desktop and one that I used from a shared network drive which I do not normally connect to, but is useful for back up if my local were to crash.

When I opened the Notebook from my network drive (I get all the same problems as noted above), I check File > Sync Status, the "Shared Notebook Synchronization" dialogue box tells me it is up to date.

When I opened the Notebook from my desktop (I get all the same problems as noted above), but when I check File > Sync Status, the "Shared Notebook Synchronization" dialogue box shows me nothing, there are no notebooks listed where you would normally see your notebooks listed.

As a final, maybe this has something to do with it, my organization is rolling out MS365, has this possibly thrown wrenches in my previously well working system?

I will be quite distraught if everything is lost. There is years of very useful information compiled in my digital notebook!

    Hi @Macdonald, Alana

If it is sync to OneDrive, I would like to suggest you go to OneDrive online open notebooks online for a check.

Besides, where are Hyperlinks or attached files stored, for example: shared network folder, OneDrive or otheres.
Please note, we need to avoid adding large file attachments (100 MB or more). For more, please refer to "Manage shared notebook use".

The account that you log into OneNote 2016 has been changed afther your organization rolled out Microsoft 365 apps?

Then I also suggest you try followings to check this issue.

    • In the notebook, create a new section.
    • Copy (don’t move) all of the pages from the old section into the new one you just created. You can do this by right-clicking each page and then choosing Move or Copy.
    • When all of the pages have been copied to the new section, press Shift + F9 to manually sync the notebook.
    • If the new section content can be successfully synced, you can safely delete the old section and then continue working in the new.
