VAMT KMS Proxy Activation

Hi All,
I have a few queries about VAMT and Proxy activation. I know that the Proxy activation can be used for MAK keys and that the VAMT server would require internet access, however I am hoping to use VAMT with Proxy activation using KMS keys.

Our customer currently has 2 separate domains and a DMZ. Domain 1 has the KMS Server, the DMZ has the VAMT Server which is also used for other licensing and reporting, and Domain 2 has servers that require activation via KMS. We have previously suggested that they just open port 1688 between the 2 domains and use a DNS Entry and Conditional forwarders to allow machines to activate against the KMS server, however they don't want to do that. They want to use the server in the DMZ. They also don't want to use MAK keys, they want it all to be activated by their KMS Server in Domain 1.

So, using the Server in the DMZ, we will have the required ports for VAMT opened to each domain including the KMS port of 1688. If I select a machine from Domain 2 in VAMT, that has a KMS Client Key, and use the option for Proxy activation, will that then attempt to activate against the KMS server in Domain 1? Or will it attempt to go to the internet as well?

Additionally, I am aware I can install the KMS Host Key in VAMT however that then also moves away from having everything activated via the KMS server in Domain 1 [at least that is how I understand it].

Any help is appreciated.
James

    Hi @James Vreeling

When you use the Proxy activation, the machine from Domain 2 in VAMT will first attempt to activate against the KMS server in Domain 1 instead of going to the Internet.

However, if your Alternate site is left blank while setting up the VAMT, it will cause the machine to check MS (over the Internet) if it can't find your Server right away and also can cause Dual Scan issues.

And also for your information you can use the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) to perform activation for client computers that do not have Internet access. The client products can be installed with any type of product key that is eligible for proxy activation: Multiple Activation Key (MAK), KMS Host key (CSVLK), or retail key.

    Hope this resolves your Query!!
