Improve networking between Azure Event Hubs and VM

Hello,
I have recently connected Azure Event Hubs to my custom solution VM which is ingesting data in real time from the Event Hub. I'm getting a spiky performance though with sometimes the Event Hub having not responded even after 500ms time.
I don't see that behaviour when attaching Azure Streaming Analytics to Event Hub. I would not want to use Streaming Analytics though.
The VM is put in the same region as the Event Hub but I guess that doesn't optimize much since there could be multiple datacenters in a region.
I saw the Proximity Placement Groups, however from the things I read it seems they're only appliable to VM's?

. At thhis time I think we are missing some key details from you to understand the use case / implemenattion.Please do provide the below details , so the community can help you with the ask .- what type of consumer you are running ?
- Batch size and also prefetch size settings on the client
