are "Special Permissions" and "Show advanced permissions" the same thing?

Hi, I've been roughly speaking an advanced entry-level Windows helpdesk guy and tutor for years. Am now trying to learn Windows Permissions.

From a file's Properties > Security tab> Advanced button > Add button -- I get this window:

The user I'm logged in as above has the "Special Permissions" checkbox greyed out and there is NO checkmark in it.

I then noticed "Show advanced permissions" on the right which gives me several more checkboxes.

Next I checked "Take ownership" and then switched back to Basic permissions and now the greyed out Special Permissions has a checkmark in it.

• Question -- is Special Permissions and Advanced Permissions roughly speaking the same thing?

Broadly speaking they’re the same set of permissions accessed via different locations in the OS. You can allow and deny largely the same things using either. Advanced are named as such bd side they appear in the advanced tab.
