Sharepoint Online - Open link from a picture in new window

Hi there,

in our SPO we have some pictures with links to external pages. Is it possible to open the links in new windows? I know it does work with e.g. Quicklinks - but unfortunately not, if the links are in pictures?

Hi @jaWa
There is a simple and fast method to achieve your requirement: just hold down "ctrl" when you click the picture, it will open in new windows, this feature is provied by browser.

thank you for your response but unfortunately this is not the option I am looking for.
Difficult to inform hundreds of users. ;) I am looking for a solution directly in SPO?

Currently there is no other ootb methed to achieve it.

I found a workaround how to open hyperlinks of images in a new tab by default, which is working for me:

add image with a hyperlink
activate "add text over image"
add the hyperlink on the image (edit directly on the image)
publish
edit again
deactivate "Add text over image" of the respective image
republish

Now if you click on the image the hyperlink will be opened in a new tab (crazy ...)

Yes a good fix however has anyone applied this successfully to front page hero parts - this would be a real plus! Cant get these refreshed to throw to open in new link! :(

This solution worked for me. I'm unsure why the other was accepted as correct. Can you imagine asking hundreds of users to use Ctrl-click to open a new window?

I hope we can get an out-of-the-box solution to open image links in a new tab/window soon.

I was thrilled that this solution worked! Yes, the ctrl+click works, but wanting to make it as simple as possible for people to engage with the video and also not be taken away from the home screen.

Was really hoping this would work, but sadly it doesn't seem to. Might try again next week. Like others, I don't want to have to provide extra instructions to ctrl+click nor should people have to know this.

I'm actually linking to other documents within our SharePoint site, so when people open the link they open that file, but when they close it instead of returning to the page they came from they are taken to the back-end document library. Ugh!

SharePoint should just have a control in the toolbox for setting up the image link that allows you to toggle on/off the open in new tab option? Or the ability to jump into the code to be able to do it if they want to restrict it to more advanced users.

This did not work for me. I'm assuming updates caused this workaround to break. I noticed that there is a max character limit of 52 with the text overlay, which does not allow the full URL and may be part of the issue causing this workaround to fail. I even tried entering a shorter URL.
