Hi,

I need to setup one windows server 2016 (in domain) to act as NTP server for another server (linux). The problem that I have encountered is that, when changing time on that windows server in backwards the time stays as configured but when time in changed to the future after 10-15 seconds server reverts date. How can I stop this without disabling "Windows Time Service" because if I disable that service my linux won't sync time with my windows server 2016.

Time synchronization on hyperv is unchecked for that windows server.

Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi,

It's not recommended to set a server member of your domain to sync time with itself.

Regarding to your Linux servers , I recommend you to use a PDC or one of domain controller as time source to sync time on Linux servers.

    Hi,

By default , the time synchronization of the member server is assured by domain controller. That's why the date and time reverts after any manual modification.

You can launch this command to check the source of time synchronization on member server:

    w32tm /query /source

    Hi!

Is ti possible to configure this windows server as NTP server just for that linux server regardless that windows server is in domain? Would it interfere with my DC or any other server in domain if I set it up as NTP?

It must be some kind of workaround...

Maybe If I set this windows server as NTP server that syncs time with itself...something in this direction?

    Thank you!

Another option would be to configure the same NTP server on your Linux and on your PDC.
Let say your PDC is configured to synchronize with time.windows.com, you could use the same NTP server on your Linux.
