Hi All,

Hoping for some insight into express updates. I've read thru all the documentation i'm aware of but having found answers to these questions:

Unfortunately i still have 1709 in my enviroment (one month to go). Updates have started timing out.

In comes express updates - should speed up the local processing for the immediate fix of not timing out - and future updates will download/install quicker (or thats the attempt)

My questions are:

We've set this up in lab - config on the SUP, and config in client settings.

  1. We've already downloaded this months updates - how are you able to trigger download/sync of express updates? I dont see any express_% in my site servers updates folder, which i believe i should see up front. Do i have to wait until new updates are released? how might i trigger download of express specifically? (have not yet tested on clients with the assumption we should see the express_% updates in the package)

Omitting this question (see replies below). WSUS express update option within WSUS not required for express updates in ConfigMgr.

2. this question may explain the above (not sure). We have already set the setting on the sup to download express files. However....some troubleshooting while wondering where/when these express updates will show up - i noticed our remote SUP (diff server then site server), WSUS does NOT have "download express installation files checked". (WSUS>Options>Update Files and Languages) - i know typically you should not mess with WSUS as configmgr takes care of it.....but?????? not checked. Documentation doesnt state to do it manually.

help? :)

Thanks in advance,
Sean

    the answer:

1: Express updates is enabled from the point forward you enable the setting. Any previous downloads will not be included with downloading express updates. There is a detailed method to "backtrack" and download old updates as express updates, but it is not done by default when enabling Express updates.

2: WSUS does not get configured to download express updates - it is only used for meta data and in a configmgr environment is not responsible for downloading

    Thanks,
    Sean

I'm pretty sure you still have to check this option manually in WSUS options. Once you hit OK, WSUS will then reach out and start downloading the express files.

And yet there are many customers who use WSUS Automated Maintenance (WAM) © with SCCM/MEMCM... There has always been a setup and forget mentality to WSUS with ConfigMgr - one of those pieces of setup is Express Files. Others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure, while most other parts of WSUS you leave alone for ConfigMgr to manage, this is not one of them.

    I stand corrected.
