SharePoint online: Content Query Web Part

Question

Hi,

I have a content query web part added in SharePoint online. This site collection consists of 2000+ sub sites and the content query webpart is defined as shown below -

When clicked on a sub-site, it doesn't display the list of documents from the documents library ( The expectation is that it shows the document names from the custom document library as a hyperlink) but I see the error shown below -

'There is a problem with the query that this Web Part is issuing. Check the configuration of this Web Part and try again.'

I am not sure what and where a change needs to be made to the web part. Please advise.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

According to this Microsoft article, so it may be caused by too many documents in the query results.

In this example, if the query is simple, the performance of the CQWP is likely to be good as long as the total amount of items is less than 5000. However, if the query is complex, the CQWP could run into performance problems even when the total amount of items is a few thousand.

I suggest you use content search web part in the classic page and highlighted content web part in the modern page.
