When trying to change the printing defaults on a printer this error comes up

So far the error only comes up on xerox and hp printers and only on windows 10 clients,
on windows 11 it's working without any issues.

    @JulPod
What is the 32bit application you are using to set the printer defaults?

SPLWOW64.exe is the binary used for a 32bit application to call into the 64bit print system.

I suggest using a 64bit tool so that the extra layer of software is not required to get to the print system.

    Thanks

Are you pulling up the Printing Preference UI with a 32bit application?

Normally this error is due to registry keys for the printer that the driver can't properly handle.

This will occur when the driver is replaced or updated to a new version.

You stated the UI works on Windows 11, are you using the same 32bit application on Windows 11 as you have on Windows 10?

You may want to rebuild the printer using the current driver. I've tried to hunt down registry settings that produce this type of failure and it takes a print driver developer to sniff out the issue.

    Thanks

    Hi @JulPod

Try using Safe Mode to enter Windows 10
Delete the files under the directory C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\x64
After rebooting, try adding the printer again.

The system uses the Splwow64.exe process to translate between 32-bit programs and the driver model of the 64-bit operating system. The file is a critical file when trying to use the printer.

    1. The printer driver is not fully compatible with 64 bit version of Windows. Hence, it's highly recommended to upgrade the latest printer driver from the manufacturer website.
    2. The printer spooler is corrupted. You can access the spooler folder and clear them for a test.
