Mail Merge/Numbered List

I am trying to format my Word 2016 doc before I do a mail merge from an Excel spreadsheet. One section of my Word doc needs to be in a numbered list. When I format that particular section and the preview, the text begins at #2 and it adds an extra number w/out text next to it. I edit the numbered list in Preview Results mode, but it doesn't stick or edit the rest of the files.
