Exchange server and migration of AD services

Hello there,

In a short time I will migrate AD servies from SBS 2011 machine to the newer in accordance with instructions in this thread (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/801473/migration-plan-of-ad-services-from-sbs-2011-to-win.html).

I've done test of migration of AD services in lab environment. Unfortunately in my lab migration there was no Exchange server 2013 (in production env, this machine is separate instance).

Should I be worried about this Exchange Server? Do I need to do any pre/post-migration actions related with AD migration and changes of domain functional level?

Thank you in advance for your constructive suggestions.

Best Regards,
AErot

    Hi AErot,

In your former post you mentioned you are moving AD services to Windows Server 2022.
Since you have an Exchange server 2013 in the environment, according to this link: Exchange Server supportability matrix
    192063-35.png
Exchange server 2013 doesn't support Windows Server 2022 Active Directory servers.
Thus you may need to migrate to Window Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016 instead to support Exchange 2013.

For the AD forest function level, please refer to this part:

In addition, if you would like to deploy an Exchange 2013 for test, here are two links which may help:
Deploy a new installation of Exchange 2013
    Exchange 2013 CU 23 download

    Hello @Kael Yao-MSFT

Thank you for your response. I should know that there is something like Exchange Server supportability matrix on Microsoft website :)

I'm just wondering on one thing. In my environment I will actually have two DCs - Windows2022 as primary DC and Windows 2012 as secondary DC. Forest/domain functional level is 'Windows Server 2012'. IMHO we've got "compatibility" here :>

One more thing - maybe it's not supported, but I saw envrioment where were two DCs basted on Windows Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2010 SP3 and all works good.

So probably wihout real test I will never know..

    Best Regards,
    AErot
