The limit is simply from the NETBIOS protocol, which has a limit of 16 bytes for the computername. So, if Windows will use the NETBIOS protocol, then the limitation will remain valid.

Windows is not allowed to create hostname greater than 15 characters to my knowledge. Is there any plan to increase the hostname length greater than 15 in new Windows release? Can you please share the details.

bh1836 0 Reputation points2023-08-14T15:17:11.6166667+00:00 It's pretty stifling on anyone's host naming convention. Not to mention on all the up/downstream dependencies. Why are we still using netbios .. thought it was being removed anyhow. As of April 2022 looks like they are deprecating with LLMNR in favor of mDNS... can't believe they have waited this long.
