Opening a search result from SharePoint 2016 in Word 365 desktop app

Hi all,

Hoping someone has a quick fix for the following:

My organisation is using SharePoint 2016 (on prem) and are in the process of enforcing a change of default browser from IE to Edge. We are about to implement Office 365 desktop applications too (moving away from Office 2016). We have stumbled across a problem opening documents which is a deal breaker for us...

Using SharePoint search, when a user clicks directly on a result link to a document using Edge, the correct 365 desktop app launches but the user is met with the following error:

Sorry, we couldn't find 'https://SiteAddress/SiteName/Library/doc.docx#search=whatever'. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?

This occurs with word docs, spreadsheets and ppt presentations, and only happens when using Edge. When using IE or Chrome, the file opens without a problem.

If I edit the url in the Edge address bar and remove the #search= part of the string, Edge and Office can now open the file.

Unsure if this is an Edge or Office 365 problem, but it happens with every file in our SharePoint environment. Note that browsing to the library and clicking directly on the file allows me to open the document without a problem, so it appears to be a problem between Edge and the Office app.

Any solutions appreciated. Have been advised to post this here instead of an Edge or Office forum as it involves SP2016.

    Microsoft Edge supports SharePoint 2016 on-premise, however, some older SharePoint functionality will not work on browsers other than Internet Explorer.

    You could try to create Internet Explorer (IE) mode in Microsoft Edge for organizations that still need Internet Explorer 11 for backward compatibility with existing websites but also need a modern browser. This feature makes it easier for organizations to use one browser, for legacy web/apps or for a modern web/app. You could refer to this article to learn more about what it is and how to configure it:
