There is no way to pause the free trial. Once you sign up for free trial, you will have to use for a month and later it will get disabled.
But if you want, you can raise subscription and billing related questions with the Azure support team from the portal though, or create a free billing support ticket.
That said, you should still be able to accomplish a lot for free and hopefully be able to use what you need to get through your class (though it depends somewhat on the course structure). If you sign up for a Pay-As-You-Go account you won't get charged unless you use services that incur a fee. When I was taking an Azure course, I just created a Pay-As-You-Go account with a credit card on file and was able to accomplish everything I needed for the class even after my trial ran out. You can publish 10 free web apps, for instance, and use all of the free features listed here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/free-services/
You'll also be able to use a lot of free demo features through the labs on the Learning site.
