SharePoint/Lists - where to find metadata values?

Question

Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction.

I am using Microsoft Lists and have discovered the column data type 'Managed metadata' which may prove very useful for a current project. However, I am unclear as to where this metadata is pulled from. It doesn't seem to correlate with the values for our 365 active users for example. Where can I find these values in the Microsoft multiverse?
