Grant File Access / Additional Permissions Required issue with Outlook for Mac

Just recently I've run into a problem with Outlook for Mac (ver. 16.61) from my Office 365 install - (running on Mac with Big Sur 11.6.6). Every time I try to open a Word attachment in an email, I am prompted that "Additional permissions are required to access the following files:" with the pop-up window entitled "Grant File Access". I then must click "select" and am then brought to the Outlook Temp folder that was created by Outlook and I have to "Grant Access" to that file. After those steps, Word pops ups and everything works as normal.

I have done the troubleshooting with Apple but they could not solve it. It seems that permissions are not correct on this Outlook Temp folder. With Apple's guidance, I made multiple attempts to add all users with Read /Write permissions, re-installed the MacOS and reset all permissions. Northing helped. I have deleted and reinstalled Office suite a few times.

Could really use some guidance and this seems to be stumping everyone.

    Hi,

I am having the same issue after my Mac update. Initially, I thought it was outlook but looks like this is an issue with Mac. I am not able open the downloaded images from WhatsApp as well. Only option is to go the download folder and access the file.

    Regards,
    Vinay

    Hi @Scott R ,

    Welcome to our forum!

Based on my searches, someone recently reported this issue to the Apple forums, which seems to be an issue with macOS Big Sur 11.6.6, as he reproduced the bug on a fresh install of 11.6.6 before installing any third party.

See: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253907764?answerId=257335259022#257335259022(Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.)

Given this case, you can refer to the workaround in the discussion: Save the attachment to the Desktop (or a folder on the Desktop), and open it from there.

In addition, the Outlook for Mac team is currently investigating the issue with Apple and I will update in this thread when more information becomes available.

This was an issue with the 11.6.6 update. Apple released an 11.6.7 update and it's resolved with the new update.
