Provisioning Package - Prompt for Computer Name?

Hi There,

I've created a Provisioning Package using Windows Configuration Designer and all is working well except it would be really handy if we could enter a Computer/Device Name at provisioning time rather than using a randomly generated one. We enroll the PCs into Intune/Azure and install some other cloud monitors and all of these get setup with the random name which means we have to go into the relevant systems and rename them all post setup. It would make life a lot easier if the name was just correct from the start! :)

Is there any way to prompt for the computer name during provisioning or somehow store it in an editable file alongside the package so it can be read in during provisioning?

Any help would be much appreciated,

OP was requesting for a prompt to appear during the provisioning process.

II am having a similar issue. We currently have the issue as we have already 600 machines named and would like to follow the same naming convention.

PC-NB-001 through to PC-NB-615, how would I continue the count.

Intune, MDT, SCCM are the same...

For every of the Microsoft Techno, we need a 3rd tool to update the name, or do tricky things to have the name we want.
Why would we want to have a random (serial/rand) name at enrollment for later change it ???
we want the correct name respecting our naming convention at beginning of the process..

If i want my device be called DUKE1, and the second DUKE2, and the third Nuken1, and the fourth Nuken2, how can i do easily with WCD ?

I need a prompt at one moment of the process asking me if i want to name it (choice 1) or not not (choice2 that would apply automatically a random name if needed).

And what we want is to pull the ser number from the device's bios and add a prefix/suffix and make that the host name - just like we do in an MDT wipe and load build.

Thats great and all but that would mean you have to change the provisioning package for every pc you setup. Who wants to do that? Not me.

Please update Windows Configuration Designer to the latest version.
You could configure device name at the beginning when you setup a new project (picture Windows Configuration Designer1).

If you’re in advanced editor, locate to Runtime settings > Accounts > ComputerAccount >ComputerName in the Available customizations section, then you set up your device name. (picture Windows Configuration Designer 2)

That is not what was asked...
We need a way to enter computer name DURING PROVISIONING.
When you run the .ppkg, instead of using the name generated by the rules of WCD project, it would be really helpful to be able to enter the PC name

This is what we need. I just want it to leave the computer name alone and keep the computer name exactly the way that it was.

Im creating my first package in hopes to enroll are current devices. My issue is, this enrollemnt seems as if it will change our convention. Devices start with PC or LT and have 5 numbers. LT14525. How can I accomplish that from this screen? I want the PC names to remain the same. Thanks
