Exchange2016 edge server address re-write

Question

Can some one Help me with edge server address re-write outbound setup requirement

went through some articles

set up a stand alone exchange edge server 2016 ,
Have send/receive connector setup on edge server
setup address re-write rule on edge server

On office365 tenant , setup send connector to relay mails through edge server

Please confirm if above setup will work

or Do we need exchange (mail server )server setup on-Prem with user synced to it for address re-write to work along with edge server setup

Check this document. As the article said:
it is clear the Address Rewrite Outbound agent will work only when the sender’s SMTP address is internal, and the session is authenticated.

Agree with the steps above all. You don’t need to sync mailboxes to exchange prem.
When the environment is set to hybrid, users will be considered as internal.
